Plastic Pen Pollution
WASTE PLASTIC PENS
One of the most ignored Plastic Waste Pollution, Generated Exclusively by Literate People.
Every year, globally, more than 60 Billion plastic pens are used & thrown, and most of them are NEVER recycled. It begs the question ‘where are they all now’?.
The manufacturers of single-use-plastic pens admit that their “products are generally not designed to be recycled”, as the singular product is not significant enough in weight and volume to be considered recyclable.

Pens are thus, one of the most ignored & unrealized plastic waste that generally end up in landfills, water bodies or incinerators to pollute our air, water and land ecosystems. Plastic pens, being cheap, are never collected at source, often lost or thrown away randomly, rarely reused and never recycled.
Casualness or carelessness in managing a small, simple and everyday utility product like pens reflects a deeper human behaviour pattern OSOM i.e. Out-of-Sight Out-of-Mind tendency alike many other single-use plastic waste items (plastic bags, bottles, etc.). Absence of responsible behaviour in managing a simple waste like plastic pens, not only impacts the environment & human health negatively but also hampers the possibility of circular economy benefits. As pens are neither collected nor recycled, a large volume of reusable & recyclable plastic goes out to pollute the environment.
